The short answer

Buy Sprout Social if you have a marketing team, several people who need to log in, a real approval chain, and a budget for social listening. Nothing on this page will beat Sprout at those jobs.

Buy Tenably if you are the marketing team. Tenably starts at $24 a month and the plan most small businesses land on is $49.99 a month for the whole business, not per person. It writes the posts, makes the videos and the flyers, schedules everything, collects and answers your Google reviews, runs your email and SMS, and finds local leads.

They are not the same product

Sprout manages content you already have. Tenably makes the content and then manages it. That single difference explains most of the price gap below.

What each tool is actually built for

Sprout Social is a social suite for a team

Sprout advertises nine feature areas: Publishing, Engagement, Analytics, Listening, Reviews, Employee Advocacy, Influencer Marketing, AI and Automation, and Social Commerce (source). Every one of those is aimed at a group of people coordinating around social channels. The Smart Inbox pulls messages into one queue so a team can work it. Approval workflows exist because more than one person touches a post. Reporting exists because someone has to show a director what happened.

That is a real problem and Sprout solves it well. It is just not the problem a solo owner has.

Tenably is a marketing department for one business

Tenably is built around the assumption that there is no team. The AI Marketing Agent drafts your week before you open the app: posts written for your business, replies drafted for your reviews, emails and flyers waiting for a yes. Nothing sends without your approval, but nothing waits on you to start it either.

Underneath that sit the pieces: the AI Video Studio, the AI Flyer Maker, the social media scheduler, review management, email and SMS, and Lead Prospector. One login, one bill, one business. The full picture is on the platform page.

Price: what you really pay in 2026

Sprout Social pricing

As of 26 August 2026, Sprout's public pricing page lists five tiers (source).

Sprout Social published plans, checked 26 August 2026

Standard$199 per seat/month annual5 social profiles, consolidated inbox and collaboration tools, keyword and location monitoring, the Trellis AI agent, review management

Advanced$399 per seat/month annualAI Assist for replies, sentiment analysis, API access, helpdesk integrations, team productivity reports, message spike alerts
EnterpriseCustomQuoted after a demo

Three things about that list matter more than the headline numbers.

First, review management starts at Standard, which is $199 per seat per month. The $79 Essentials plan does not include it. If reviews are why you are shopping, $199 is your floor.

Second, the advertised rates are annual. The banner on the trial offer reads "No credit card required. Annual billing." One third-party pricing analysis states plainly that all tiers above Essentials require annual prepayment with no month-to-month option, and that prepaid unused fees are forfeited if you cancel mid-term (source). Treat that as a secondhand claim, but treat the annual commitment as real: it appears on the vendor pricing page itself.

Third, social listening is an add-on, not a plan feature. The Sprout pricing page says Premium Analytics and Listening are each available as individual add-ons, and Sprout does not publish the price. Multiple third-party write-ups put Advanced Listening at around $999 per month on top of your seats (archive.com, omnisocials.com). Sprout has not confirmed that figure publicly, so take it as an order of magnitude, not a quote.

Tenably pricing

Tenably is priced per business, not per seat. Full detail is on the pricing page.

  • Creator, $24/month or $229/year. AI Video Studio, AI Image Studio and Flyer Maker, AI music and voiceovers, video and image editor, scheduling to 2 social accounts, 1 brand. 1,000 credits a month.
  • Pro, $49.99/month or $479/year. Everything in Creator plus auto-posting to every connected platform, Smart Scheduler, review monitoring and responses, the Get Reviews funnel with link and QR code, auto-comment and auto-reply, AI email campaigns, link pages, 3 brands. 2,100 credits a month.
  • Business, $90/month or $859/year. Everything in Pro plus 10 brands, the AI Teammate running your plan unattended, Lead Prospector, SMS campaigns and review alerts, auto ads and A/B testing, browser automations, competitor analysis, custom workflows, priority support. 5,000 credits a month.

Cancel anytime. Annual billing saves 20 percent.

The one-person math

Both figures below are for one person, one year, on the cheapest plan from each vendor that includes review management.

One person, one year, cheapest plan with review management
Sprout Social StandardTenably Pro
Rate$199 per seat/month, annual$49.99/month, or $479/year
One seat, one year$2,388$479 to $599.88
BillingAnnual commitmentMonthly or annual, cancel anytime
Second personAdd $2,388/yearIncluded

Sprout Standard for one seat costs roughly five times Tenably Pro on annual billing. Add a second person and Sprout doubles while Tenably does not move.

That gap is not Sprout overcharging. It is Sprout selling a different thing to a different buyer. But if you are the buyer described on this page, the gap is the whole decision.

Where Sprout Social is genuinely better

We are not going to pretend otherwise. Five areas, and they are not small.

Social listening. Tenably does not do it. Sprout's listening add-on tracks conversation across the open social web, not just your own accounts. If you need to know what people say about your category when they are not tagging you, Sprout has a product for that and Tenably does not.

Reporting depth. Sprout's Advanced tier includes sentiment analysis, team productivity reports, message spike alerts, and API access (source). Those reports are built to be exported and presented. Tenably shows you what worked so you can do more of it. That is a different bar.

Team approvals. Sprout has real multi-step message approval workflows, and on the Advanced plan you can add up to three external approvers who do not have a Sprout account (source). If a client or a legal reviewer has to sign off before a post goes out, that is a genuine requirement and Sprout meets it. Tenably's model is simpler: the owner approves, then it sends.

Integrations and scale. Sprout connects to helpdesk and CRM systems, supports unlimited social profiles from Professional up, and has the enterprise onboarding, single sign-on, and support that large organizations need. Tenably supports up to 10 brands on its top plan. Above that, Sprout is the correct tool.

Trellis. Sprout's proprietary AI agent went generally available to all customers in 2026 and runs across Publishing, Listening, the Smart Inbox, and Reporting, turning social data into narrative and surfacing sentiment shifts as they happen (source). It is a serious piece of engineering aimed at analysis, which is exactly what a social team needs.

Where Tenably is genuinely better

It makes the content. This is the largest single difference and it is not close. Sprout's advertised feature set has no AI video generation, no AI image or flyer generation, no email marketing, no SMS marketing, and no lead prospecting (source). Sprout schedules and analyzes the content you bring. Tenably produces it: a script, a voiceover, captions, music, and a cut video from a text idea or your own photos, plus print-ready flyers and branded social images built from your logo, colors, and photos.

It asks for the reviews. Sprout's reviews page describes monitoring, organizing, filtering, and replying across eight networks. It does not advertise a way to request reviews from customers. Tenably's Smart Review Collection sends one ask per happy customer by link, QR code, or text, and never twice within 90 days. Answering reviews protects a rating. Asking for them is how a rating moves.

It costs what a small business can pay. $49.99 a month for the business, rather than $199 a month for one seat.

It covers channels Sprout does not sell. Email campaigns and two-way SMS written and designed by AI, with keyword opt-in, so a customer texts JOIN from a window sticker and lands on your list with consent on record. Lead Prospector searches a map for local businesses, pulls contact details, and drafts the first outreach. Those are three separate purchases outside Sprout.

It is one bill. The realistic Sprout stack for a small business that wants reviews, email, texts, and content is Sprout plus an email tool plus an SMS tool plus a design tool plus a video tool. Tenably is one subscription. The Twisted Mac case study shows what that looks like for one restaurant.

Review management: the closest head-to-head

This is the one area where the two products genuinely overlap, so it deserves detail.

Sprout covers more networks. Its reviews product integrates Google My Business, Yelp, Tripadvisor, Facebook, the Apple App Store, Google Play, Trustpilot, and Glassdoor (source). You can sort, filter, build custom views, and analyze review-score health across locations and networks. If you are a multi-location brand with an app and a Glassdoor page, that breadth is worth money.

Tenably goes deeper on Google and on the ask. Every new Google review gets a reply drafted in your voice, careful with the three stars, warm with the five. You approve, or you turn on auto-reply for the routine ones. A low-star review fires an instant SMS alert to your phone so you can fix it while it still matters. Review trends show you what customers keep bringing up. Competitor intelligence compares your rating, review volume, and momentum against the businesses down the street. The detail is on the review management page.

And Tenably collects. That is the piece that changes a number. A steady, once-per-customer ask is how a 4.2 becomes a 4.8. The mechanics are in how to get more Google reviews automatically.

The cost difference here is stark. Sprout's review management begins on the Standard plan at $199 per seat per month, billed annually, which is $2,388 a year for one person. Tenably Pro includes review collection, monitoring, AI replies, trends, and SMS alerts at $49.99 a month.

Content creation is the real gap

Most small businesses do not fail at social media because their scheduling tool was weak. They fail because on Tuesday there was nothing to post.

Sprout does not solve that. It is not designed to. Its job starts once a post exists.

Tenably's job starts before that. Pick a range on the calendar and it fills with posts written for your business, your food, your services, your specials. Describe a video and the AI Video Studio writes it, voices it, captions it, scores it, and cuts it for vertical, square, or landscape. Describe a Monday special and the flyer comes back designed with your prices, your photos, and your branding, ready for the counter and the feed. Say what you want to announce and the email arrives written and laid out.

One post can then go everywhere at once. That workflow is walked through in how to post to TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube at once.

If content production is your bottleneck, a better scheduler will not move the number.

Who should pick which

Pick Sprout Social if you have three or more people in marketing, you need multi-step or external approvals, you need social listening across the open web, you need boardroom-grade reporting, you run more than 10 brands, or you need CRM and helpdesk integrations. You have the budget and the headcount to make $199 to $399 per seat pay for itself.

Pick Tenably if you are the owner and the marketing department, you need content made and not just scheduled, you want more Google reviews and not just a tidier view of the ones you have, you want email and texts in the same place as your posts, and you would rather pay under $600 a year than close to $2,400. Everything Tenably does sits behind one login.

Pick both if you are a larger brand using Sprout for social operations and you want Tenably for local review collection and content production at individual locations. They are not mutually exclusive.

Sprout Social vs Tenably: common questions

How much does Sprout Social cost in 2026?

As of August 2026, Sprout's published rates are Essentials at $79 per seat per month billed annually or $99 billed monthly, Standard at $199, Professional at $299, and Advanced at $399, with Enterprise quoted custom. Those are per-seat rates, so cost multiplies with each person. Listening and premium analytics are separate paid add-ons (source).

Is there a cheaper alternative to Sprout Social for a small business?

Yes. Tenably is priced per business rather than per seat, starting at $24 a month, with the Pro plan at $49.99 a month. Pro includes auto-posting to every connected platform, review collection and AI-drafted review replies, and AI email campaigns. Sprout's cheapest plan that includes review management is $199 per seat per month, billed annually. See pricing.

Does Sprout Social manage Google and Yelp reviews?

Yes. Sprout's review management integrates Google My Business, Yelp, Tripadvisor, Facebook, the Apple App Store, Google Play, Trustpilot, and Glassdoor, and lets you sort, filter, and reply from one stream. It is included from the Standard plan up, which is $199 per seat per month billed annually (source).

What can Sprout Social do that Tenably cannot?

Social listening across the open social web, deeper exportable reporting including sentiment analysis and team productivity reports, multi-step approval workflows with external approvers, employee advocacy, influencer marketing, unlimited social profiles from Professional up, and enterprise integrations such as CRM and helpdesk. If you need those, Sprout is the better buy.

What can Tenably do that Sprout Social cannot?

Make the content. Tenably generates finished videos with script, voiceover, captions, and music, plus print-ready flyers and branded images. It also asks your customers for reviews by link, QR code, or text, runs AI-written email and SMS campaigns with keyword opt-in, and finds local business leads on a map. None of those appear on Sprout's advertised feature list.

Does Sprout Social require an annual contract?

Sprout advertises its Standard, Professional, and Advanced rates on annual billing, and the banner on its 30-day trial offer reads "No credit card required. Annual billing." Only Essentials shows a monthly rate, at $99 per seat per month. Tenably bills monthly or annually and you can cancel anytime (source).

Can Sprout Social create videos or flyers with AI?

Not as far as its published feature list goes. Sprout advertises Publishing, Engagement, Analytics, Listening, Reviews, Employee Advocacy, Influencer Marketing, AI and Automation, and Social Commerce. Its AI features, including AI Assist and the Trellis agent, aim at writing help and social intelligence rather than generating video or print-ready design (source).

Which should I choose if I run one small business by myself?

Tenably, in almost every case. Sprout's strengths are team coordination, listening, and reporting depth, and its pricing assumes multiple seats. A single owner who needs content produced, posts scheduled, reviews collected and answered, and email and texts sent will get more of that job done for less on Tenably Pro at $49.99 a month.

Try the platform that makes the content too

Plans start at $24 a month. Pro, at $49.99 a month, is where most small businesses land: auto-posting everywhere, review collection and AI replies, and AI email campaigns for one business, not one seat.
