The best AI social media manager for small businesses

Nine tools, ranked on whether they actually write the post, make the picture, publish it, and answer the comments and reviews. Every price checked in August 2026 on the vendor pricing page.

Third-party prices verified 26 August 2026.

Short answer

Tenably AI is our pick for the owner with no time and no designer: it writes the posts, makes the visuals, publishes, and has the reply already drafted. Buffer is the cheapest option and the best free plan. Vista Social wins on multi-location reputation. We build Tenably, so we ranked it first, then said where the other eight beat us.

How we picked

We scored every tool on six things, in this order, and skipped the two that only matter to a 40-person marketing team: agency white-labelling and social listening. Where a vendor's own help centre contradicted its marketing page, we went with the help centre.

Does it create, or only move?

A tool that needs you to arrive with a finished post has not solved the problem most owners actually have, which is that nothing gets written in the first place.

Can it make the visuals?

Text-only AI leaves you in a design tool at 11pm. If a tool generates no images and no video, add your design subscription to its sticker price before you compare.

Does it publish where you sell?

Including Google Business Profile, which local customers see before they ever see your Instagram. Support for it varies more than any other channel.

Does it help you reply?

Comments and reviews, with AI drafting rather than an empty box in an inbox. This is the most repetitive job in small business social media and the one the category has mostly skipped.

What does it cost at your size?

Per channel, per seat, per brand and flat pricing produce wildly different bills from similar sticker prices. We did the arithmetic at a realistic small business profile count.

Do you stay in control?

Anything that can post or reply in public without your approval is a brand risk. We looked for approval gates you can leave on and automation you have to switch on deliberately.

  1. #1

    Tenably AI

Best overall for a small business owner
    Best for
The owner with no time and no designer who wants posts, pictures, replies and reviews handled in one place.
    Missing
Deep social listening, DM inboxes, agency approval chains, and review sites beyond Google.
    Price
    From $24/mo

Tenably starts one step earlier than the rest of this list. You do not open an empty composer. You pick the days you want covered and the content calendar fills itself with posts written from your real business details: your food, your services, your current offers. You swap, edit or skip any of it, and nothing publishes without your approval.

It makes the visuals too. Image Studio and the AI Flyer Maker produce branded graphics sized per platform, and AI Video Studio builds short-form video with voiceover, captions and music. One approval sends the post to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, X and Google Business Profile. Image and video allowances are credit-based and differ by plan, so check what your tier includes.

The part that matters most is the replies. Google reviews and Facebook and Instagram comments land in one inbox with the reply already drafted, not with an empty box and a button. You edit and send, or switch on auto-reply for the routine ones. Low-star reviews are flagged for your own words. Correct a draft and the marketing agent remembers: a rule you teach once outranks what the writer works out on its own. Review collection runs on the same rails, by link, QR code or text.

Where the others beat us: Sprout Social and Vista Social cover far more review sites, Metricool has deeper analytics and longer history, and Hootsuite, Sprout and Vista have real DM inboxes and sentiment-tagged listening that we do not compete with.

  2. #2

    Buffer

    Best free plan
    Best for
A solo owner on a tight budget who already has the visuals sorted.
    Missing
Image and video generation, DMs, and Google Business Profile analytics.
    Price
Free for 3 channels, then $5 per channel/moas of 26 August 2026, source

The cheapest credible way into this category, and genuinely good at what it does. Four channels on Essentials is about $20 a month, and the AI Assistant runs on unlimited credits on every plan rather than the small monthly allowance most rivals give you.

The standout is Buffer Community, included free on every plan. It covers comments across ten networks including Google Business Profile and drafts reply suggestions in your voice. It even handles Google reviews: when a comment carries a star rating, Buffer suggests a response. Nothing else at this price does that, and it is the single feature that puts Buffer above tools that cost four times as much.

Where Buffer beats Tenably. Price, at the very bottom of the range, and the free tier: you can run three channels for nothing indefinitely, which we do not offer. Its per-network publishing options are also more granular than ours.

The limits are real. Comments only, no DMs anywhere. No image or video generation, so the creative work stays on your plate. No Google Business Profile analytics. And per-channel pricing punishes multi-location businesses: ten locations on Team lands around $100 a month, which is no longer the cheap option.

  3. #3

    Vista Social

    Best for multi-location reputation
    Best for
A multi-location brand that needs reviews, DMs and comments in one queue.
    Missing
A cheap entry tier, more than two seats at the base price, and in-app replies on four of its six review sites.
    Price
    $79/mo for 15 profiles and 2 usersas of 26 August 2026, source

Vista Social is the closest thing on this list to what we built, and in two places it goes further. Its unified inbox pulls comments, DMs, mentions and reviews into a single queue, and its AI answers them in your brand voice. Review monitoring covers Facebook, Google Business Profile, Yelp, TripAdvisor, OpenTable and Trustpilot with alerts and exportable review analytics.

It also generates AI images and AI video on every plan, which is rare outside the creative-first tools, and its competitor reporting covers Facebook, Instagram and X.

Where Vista Social beats Tenably. Six review sites against our focus on Google, a true DM inbox with automations, and social CRM records against the people who talk to you. If your reputation lives on Yelp and TripAdvisor as much as on Google, it is the better buy.

The catches: $79 buys only two seats, steep for a solo operator with no cheaper tier below it. Direct reply from inside the product works only for Facebook and Google Business Profile, and the other four sites hand you a link out to their own response page, which breaks the workflow exactly where it should not. Listening is an add-on at $75/mo and X is $29/mo on top of an already high base.

  4. #4

    Metricool

Best analytics and Google Business Profile reporting
    Best for
A data-minded owner or a local business that wants real reporting.
    Missing
Image and video generation, AI-drafted replies, and generous AI credits.
    Price
Free for 1 brand, Starter from about $20/moas of 26 August 2026, source

The best free plan in this roundup and, comfortably, the best reporting. Paid plans carry unlimited history, competitor tracking across up to 100 profiles, unified ad reporting alongside organic, and a Looker Studio export that means you can put social numbers next to everything else you measure.

Its Google Business Profile support is the strongest of the schedulers: posting without the seven-day expiry dance, real profile analytics, and review replies from the inbox.

Where Metricool beats Tenably. Analytics depth, history length and competitor coverage, none of which we match, plus a genuinely usable free tier for a single brand.

The AI is the weak half. It is a thin text helper on tight credits, roughly 5 a month on free and 20 on Starter per brand, with no image or video generation at all. Replies are saved text templates rather than AI drafts, which is a macro by another name. The free plan also excludes LinkedIn and X. Note that the pricing slider returned inconsistent figures at higher brand counts across two fetches, so confirm your tier at checkout.

  5. #5

    SocialBee

Best unlimited AI writing on a small budget
    Best for
Someone who wants to write a lot with AI and never think about credits.
    Missing
A free tier, video generation, competitor analysis, and any AI help in the inbox.
    Price
    $29/mo for 5 profilesas of 26 August 2026, source

The only tool here with genuinely unmetered AI writing. Unlimited text generation and unlimited DALL-E 3 images on every plan, including the $29 tier, which changes how you use the product: you stop rationing and start generating three versions of everything.

AI Copilot is more strategic than a caption box. It recommends which channels to focus on, builds a posting schedule around content pillars, and fills the categories it just proposed, which is closer to a plan than a prompt.

Where SocialBee beats Tenably. No credit ceiling on writing or images at any tier. If your workflow is high-volume copy and you resent counting credits, that is a real advantage over our plan allowances.

What it does not do matters for a local business. No free tier and no video generation. One user until you reach the $99 plan. No competitor analysis. And the engagement inbox has no AI assist and no Google reviews at all, so the two jobs that eat the most time for a local owner, comment replies and review replies, both stay manual.

  6. #6

    Predis.ai

Best for AI video and carousels
    Best for
A business whose only bottleneck is video and carousel creative.
    Missing
Any inbox at all, and auto-posting on the cheapest plan.
    Price
    $19/mo Coreas of 26 August 2026, source

One of only three tools here that produces finished video. Feed it a prompt, a product link or an image and it generates UGC-style video with AI avatars, plus carousels and static ad creative in your brand colours. The output is closer to something you would actually run than most in-app generators manage.

Unlimited team members on every plan, including the $19 one, which is unusual in a category where seats are the main way you get charged.

Where Predis.ai beats Tenably. Volume and variety of creative formats at the low end, particularly carousels and ad-style statics, and unlimited seats on the entry plan. If you already have publishing and replies handled elsewhere, it is a cheap creative engine. If you do not, see our AI Video Studio.

Two large gaps. There is no inbox of any kind: no comments, no DMs, no reviews, and its own help centre lists a social inbox as still on the roadmap. And auto-posting is not included on the $19 Core plan, so the cheap tier generates content that you then publish by hand. Core also caps you at 65 posts a month and one brand.

  7. #7

    Later

Best visual planner for Instagram and TikTok
    Best for
An Instagram-first brand that plans visually and answers comments in the native apps.
    Missing
Google Business Profile support, an inbox on the entry plan, and content generation of any kind.
    Price
$25/mo Starter, $18.75/mo billed annuallyas of 26 August 2026, source

Still the nicest visual calendar in the category. The media library, the drag-and-drop grid preview, the UGC collection tools and Link in Bio are all more polished than the equivalents elsewhere, and its best-time-to-post guidance comes off analysis of a very large body of published posts.

Where Later beats Tenably. Visual planning. If your feed is a grid you compose deliberately and you want to see it before it exists, nothing on this list including us gives you a better view of it.

Then the caps bite. Starter allows 30 posts per profile per month, 5 AI credits a month, and no inbox at all, and you cannot buy more credits when you run out mid-month. There is no image or video generation, no AI reply drafting, and no Google Business Profile support of any kind, which rules it out for most local businesses before price enters the conversation. Competitor benchmarking arrives only on the Scale plan. If cross-posting is the real job, read how to post to TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube at once.

  8. #8

    Hootsuite

Best single inbox for a growing team
    Best for
A business past the solo stage that wants one platform and can absorb per-user pricing.
    Missing
A low entry price, published month-to-month rates, and shipped comment reply drafting.
    Price
$99 per user/mo, billed annuallyas of 26 August 2026, source

The broadest single product here. One subscription buys scheduling, a true inbox covering DMs and comments across seven networks, AI image generation, sentiment analysis, benchmarking against up to 20 competitors, and social listening. In April 2026 it added Google Business Profile reviews to that inbox, which closed its biggest local gap.

Where Hootsuite beats Tenably. One unified inbox for DMs as well as comments, listening with sentiment, competitor benchmarking at that scale, and proper seat permissions and approval chains for a team of several people. We are not built for any of that.

Then the price cliff. $99 is the minimum and it is per user, so a three-person team is around $297 a month before anything else. Unlimited social accounts requires the jump to $199. ROI analytics and the advanced inbox are add-ons on top. Month-to-month rates are not published at all, which is worth knowing before you budget. And its own AI page still lists comment and DM reply drafting as coming soon, so the exact thing you might be buying it for may not have shipped yet.

  9. #9

    Sprout Social

Best review coverage across many sites
    Best for
A business with a real budget where reputation across many sites is the whole job.
    Missing
Affordable seats, review management on the entry plan, and image or video generation.
    Price
    $79 per seat/mo billed annually, $99 monthlyas of 26 August 2026, source

The widest reputation coverage in the category by some distance: Google Business Profile, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Facebook, Trustpilot, Glassdoor, and both major app stores. Reviews become assignable cases with a reply-rate report over them, and the AI both suggests replies and enhances the ones you write yourself.

Where Sprout beats Tenably. Eight review sources against our focus on Google, case assignment and reply-rate reporting for a team, and sentiment and intent tagging across everything that arrives. For a franchise or a multi-site operator with staff, that is the right shape of product.

The cost, and a catch inside it. Pricing is per seat with no volume discount, so three people on Standard is roughly $597 a month. Essentials and Standard both cap at 5 social profiles. And review management starts at Standard, not Essentials, so a small business that came for Google reviews is looking at $199 per seat rather than the advertised $79. Listening and Premium Analytics cost extra again, and it generates no images and no video.

What an AI social media manager should actually do

Most tools that call themselves an AI social media manager are schedulers with a caption button bolted on. They still wait for you to decide what to post. If your problem is that nothing gets written in the first place, that is not much help.

A social media manager, human or otherwise, does seven things:

  1. Decides what to post. Ideas grounded in your business, not generic prompts.
  2. Writes the caption. In your voice, sized for each platform.
  3. Makes the image or the video. The part that stops most owners cold.
  4. Schedules and publishes. Everywhere, at the right time, without five logins.
  5. Answers the comments. An unanswered question in public is a lost customer.
  6. Answers the reviews. For a local business this matters more than the posts do.
  7. Reports what worked. So next month is better than this one.

Most tools do jobs 2, 4 and 7 well. That is a scheduler with AI captions, which is a real product, just not the one the marketing implies.

The job almost nobody does

Of the eight competitors we researched, only four use AI to draft a reply to a comment for you: Buffer, Vista Social, Sprout Social and Hootsuite, and Hootsuite still lists comment and DM reply drafting as coming soon on its own AI page.

The other four do not. SocialBee's engagement inbox has no AI assist. Later has no reply drafting, and no inbox at all on its cheapest plan. Metricool offers saved text templates, which is a macro rather than AI. Predis.ai has no comment inbox at all, and its help centre says one is still on the roadmap.

The one test worth running

Comment on your own post from a personal account and see what happens. If a reply is already written when you open the tool, that is a manager. If you get an empty box, that is an inbox. The difference is about an hour a week. We wrote up the workflow in how to reply to every social media comment automatically.

This is also the gap in the coverage. Buffer lists 11 tools, Sprout lists 19, and none of the big roundups has a review column at all. For a real local business, an AI social media manager and something that answers your Google reviews are the same job.

Three different products wear the same name

Every list you will read mixes three things that are not substitutes for each other:

  • Schedulers with AI captions. Buffer, Later, Metricool. They move content you already have.
  • Creative generators. Predis.ai. They make the asset, and some cannot even publish it on the cheapest plan.
  • Managers. Tenably AI, Vista Social, Hootsuite, Sprout Social. The whole loop, including the inbox.

A $19 generator and a $99 manager are not competing for the same money. Decide which of the three you need before you compare a single price, because a cheap tool in the wrong category is the most expensive purchase in this market.

How this guide differs from our whole-stack roundup

This page covers one category: social media management. Writing the post, making the image or video, scheduling, publishing, replying to comments, replying to reviews, and reading the numbers afterwards. Everything here is ranked and priced against those jobs and nothing else.

If your question is wider than social, read the best AI marketing tools for small business instead. That one maps the whole stack: email, ads, lead generation, faceless video and CRM, at the level of categories rather than individual prices. Use it to work out which categories you need, then come back here for the social pick.

If you would rather see the categories as one product, the Tenably platform overview shows how posting, reviews, video and outreach connect.

Buyer's guide: how to choose in ten minutes

Start with your actual bottleneck

Say the sentence out loud: the reason I do not post is ____. Then buy for that answer and nothing else.

  • I never know what to post. You need generation, not scheduling. Tenably AI or SocialBee.
  • I have ideas but no pictures or video. Tenably AI, Predis.ai or Vista Social.
  • Posting everywhere is tedious. Buffer will do, cheaply.
  • Comments and reviews pile up unanswered. Tenably AI, Buffer, Vista Social or Sprout Social.
  • I have no idea what is working. Metricool.
  • My team of three trips over each other. Hootsuite or Sprout Social.

Buying for a bottleneck you do not have is the most common mistake in this category, and the one that makes people conclude the software does not work.

Five things to check before you pay

  1. Ask it to write a week of posts. Do they mention anything true about your business, or could they be for anyone in your industry?
  2. Look for the image or the video. If there is none, add your design tool subscription to the bill.
  3. Connect Google Business Profile. Many tools cannot. Later has no support for it at all.
  4. Comment on your own post from a personal account. Is a reply drafted, or an empty box?
  5. Schedule to every platform you use, then see what happens when one fails. A tool that reports success for a post the platform rejected is worse than one that says nothing.

Watch the pricing unit, not the price

Four different units are in play across these nine tools, and the sticker price tells you almost nothing on its own:

How each tool charges, and where that gets expensive
UnitToolsWhere it hurts
Per channelBufferCheap at 3 profiles, punishing at 15
Per seatHootsuite, Sprout SocialEvery extra person costs a full plan
Per brand bundleLater, SocialBee, Metricool, Vista SocialPredictable, but the post and credit caps bite
Flat per planTenably AI, Predis.aiOne price, though allowances still differ by tier

Do the arithmetic for your real number of profiles and people before you compare anything. A $5 tool and a $99 tool can land within $20 of each other at ten profiles. Then check the add-ons: Vista Social charges $75/mo for listening and $29/mo for X on top of the base, and deeper analytics cost extra at both Sprout and Hootsuite.

One more reason to do your own maths: pricing for these tools is quoted inconsistently across the pages that rank for this search. We found Hootsuite listed at $99, $199 and $199 per user on three pages competing for the same query. Every number on this page links to the vendor page we read it from, on the date we read it.

What an AI social media manager still cannot do

It will not build relationships in your DMs, work a room at a local event, or invent a brand voice you have never articulated. It will not fix a business problem that is showing up as bad reviews, because the reviews are the symptom.

And nothing here should run fully unattended on day one. Approve what goes out for the first month, until you trust the voice. Any tool that makes that hard is telling you something about its confidence in its own output.

Common questions

What is an AI social media manager?

Software that does the work a social media manager does: deciding what to post, writing the caption, making the image or video, publishing to each platform, replying to comments and reviews, and reporting on what worked. Most tools do only some of those. The ones worth paying for create the content rather than waiting for you to supply it.

Can AI really reply to comments and reviews for my business?

Yes, and it is the highest-value thing these tools do. Tenably drafts a reply to every Google review and every Facebook and Instagram comment before you open the app, using your real business facts. Buffer, Vista Social and Sprout Social also draft replies. Hootsuite lists full drafting as coming soon.

What is the cheapest AI social media manager for a small business?

Buffer covers 3 channels at no cost and Essentials starts at $5 per channel per month as of August 2026. Metricool covers one brand at no cost. Neither generates images or video, so add your design tool to the bill. If you need the content made as well as scheduled, Tenably starts at $24 a month and Predis.ai at $19.

Can an AI social media manager replace hiring an agency?

For most small businesses it replaces the routine 80 percent: the daily posts, the visuals, the cross-posting, the comment replies, the review asks. It does not replace strategy, partnerships, local relationships or anyone who knows your market. Think of it as taking the repetition off your plate so the judgement calls are the only thing left.

Which platforms can these tools post to?

Most cover Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and X. Google Business Profile is the one that varies, and it matters most for local businesses because customers see it before your Instagram. Tenably, Buffer, Vista Social, Metricool, SocialBee, Hootsuite, Sprout Social and Predis.ai all support it. Later does not.

Which AI social media tools can generate images and video?

Video is rare: Tenably, Vista Social and Predis.ai generate it. For images, add SocialBee and Hootsuite to that list. Buffer, Metricool, Later and Sprout Social generate neither and expect you to bring visuals from a separate design tool, which is a real cost to add to their sticker price.

Will AI post something embarrassing without my permission?

Only if you let it. In Tenably nothing publishes or sends without your approval by default. The calendar shows every planned post and its exact time, and you can edit, swap or skip any of it. Auto-reply and daily posting are switches you turn on deliberately, and can turn off again.

How much should a small business spend on this?

Between $20 and $100 a month covers almost every small business need in 2026. Below $20 you are usually buying a scheduler and doing the creative work yourself. Above $100 you are usually paying for team seats, listening and enterprise reporting. Check the pricing unit first: per-channel and per-seat pricing can triple the bill.

Stop opening an empty composer

Tenably AI writes your posts, makes your images and videos, publishes everywhere, drafts a reply to every comment and review, and collects more Google reviews while you run the business. Plans from $24 a month. Cancel anytime.
